“After Chaos: Nocturnal Vigil” continues the path that began with “Cycle of the Dying Sun (Dawn of Ashen Realms)”, but moves into a different landscape.
Where the previous album dealt with transformation, endings and the collapse of old forms, this work explores what remains after the upheaval has passed. It is less about destruction and more about observation. Less about action and more about presence.
In many ways, this album represents the middle chapter of a larger journey. While it stands on its own, its themes and symbolism are deeply connected to what came before and to what is still waiting beyond the horizon. For listeners wishing to fully enter the world of”After Chaos: Nocturnal Vigil”, it is recommended to first experience “Cycle of the Dying Sun (Dawn of Ashen Realms)”, as many of the ideas, transformations and currents explored there continue to unfold here in altered form.
The album is presented as a double album divided into two parts and four movements, each movement containing two songs. Every composition is connected to a specific rune, not as a strict system of interpretation, but as a symbolic threshold within the unfolding journey. The runes serve as companions through the album’s themes of stillness, transformation, continuity, animistic perception and the hidden currents that move beneath reality.
Part I unfolds through “Movement A – The Stillness After Collapse” and “Movement B – Vigil Beneath the Weave”, while Part II continues through “Movement C – Continuity Beyond Form” and concludes with “Movement D – Dissolution” into the Unbounded.
Musically, the album remains rooted in the heavy, atmospheric and unmistakably dark foundation that has defined Runemagick for decades. At the same time, it reaches further into more spacious and ambient territories. This is especially evident in “Movement D – Dissolution into the Unbounded”, where the music gradually sheds form and moves toward a more meditative and immersive state. The album is not intended as a collection of isolated songs, but as a complete journey that unfolds over time. It asks the listener to slow down, listen deeply and allow the experience to reveal itself gradually.
Many of the lyrics were written during a period of personal change and reflection. While not autobiographical in a literal sense, they draw inspiration from experiences of transformation, uncertainty, acceptance and the search for meaning beyond established structures. Runic symbolism, animistic perspectives, the cosmic weave of Urðr and the relationship between chaos, stillness and becoming all flow through the work.
Dísa Draugurinn contributes guest vocals on several tracks, adding her distinctive voice to key moments throughout the album. She has also created multiple illustrations featured within the album layout as well as artwork used for several digital singles.
The album cover combines the work of two artists. The background oil painting was created by Danny Pham, while the central illustration layered upon it was created by Pablo Robbio (Spectrum Art).
“After Chaos: Nocturnal Vigil” is ultimately an album about standing within the aftermath, remaining attentive to what emerges from silence, and recognizing that not all revelations arrive through force. Some arrive through stillness.
The collapse has passed. The vigil has begun. What follows remains unwritten.
