Melodic Power/Death Metal? Yes, it does sound strange, but we believe that this “label” fits perfectly into the music because these guys have the skills in mixing these apparently “so far apart genres” and create an excellent album, full of melodies and supported by a heavy base of extreme metal.

A gem from the Invasion Records roster, Skymning arrived onto the Swedish melodic Death Metal scene with an even more pronounced reliance on the former half of that genre. Essentially, they were writing power metal tunes and slathering the sorts of growled vocals you’d expect form their peers right on top of them.Certainly, bands like a Dark Tranquillity or In Flames could also be equated to using traditional, melodic Metal aesthetics, but this group took it to a whole new level on their debut.

Let us analyze a bit how they could put out such a good album mixing in a prefect way the aggression with the harmony. From the opener “Sweeping the World” the message is clear: fast bass drum in power metal style, raspy and blackened vocals with lots of melodies for the lead guitars lines, and aggression in the rhythmic session. The rhythmic guitar plays massive, compact but fluent epic riffs to support the sad/epic melodies of the sound. The solos are incredibly well done and there are some blast beats too, to break the fast bass drum passages.

The tempo changes are always around the corner, and the melodies are necessary for a band that, despite being young, has the knowledge and command of the instruments in each single sector. Albums like this one are not common in general and they must be taken without hesitations. This is a small gem in the history of Metal.
